Hopscotch Coffee available in an instant: Coffee shop adds freeze-dried packets

Hopscotch Coffee has added another way for people to enjoy their coffee — single-cup packets of some of the coffee blends are available in freeze-dried form.

That allows Hopscotch Coffee customers to enjoy a cup even if they don’t have a coffee pot or French press available — or the time to make a pot. All you need is hot water and a cup, along with the Hopscotch Coffee.

“We don’t think it’s quite as good as fresh coffee,” said Hopscotch owner Jeff Grant, “but it’s much better than what you would get in the grocery store.”

Currently two varieties of instant Hopscotch Coffee are available in the boxes, which have six packets inside. Each packet makes one cup of coffee, for about $2 a cup each, according to Grant.

For now a dark and light roast is available but Grant anticipates adding a decaf and potentially other roasts.

Grant said Hopscotch linked up with a company online to provide the freeze-dried packets. The beans are roasted at Hopscotch and sent to the company that freeze-dries it and coverts it to a powder form.

The boxes are available at both Hopscotch stores, at 235 W. Dodds St. and 212 N. Madison St., and also online at hopscotchcoffee.com. Each box has a two-year “best by” date but Grant said the packets will last longer with little noticeable flavor degradation.

“We’re looking for other partners that might want to carry it locally,” Grant said. “And we’re getting the word out to Airbnbs and offices. We can provide them with an easy, quality option.”
