Sheriff has new details in Martin County death investigation

MARTIN COUNTY — The Sheriff’s Office is still trying to piece together the timeline of events that led to a man being found dead in the Intracoastal Waterway.

Jason Okleshen, 49, of Jupiter, was found near a private dock near the Jupiter Waterfront Inn, 18903 SE Federal Hwy., around 11 a.m. July 21.

Sheriff John Budensiek said around 5 p.m. July 20, Okleshen and his wife had checked into the inn, which was around 300 yards south of where he was found in the water.

Around 6 a.m. July 21, deputies got multiple calls about Okleshen climbing up and down balconies of the inn and knocking on doors.

Budensiek said at that time Okleshen was last seen running through the parking lot, and last seen on security footage running north on Southeast Federal Highway and the Federal Highway Access Road. He said deputies went to the area but were unable to find Okleshen.

Around 11 a.m. Okleshen was found dead, in the water near a private dock. Budensiek said detectives do not suspect foul play or suicide, but they know Okleshen was on and off medications that affected his mental state.

“Currently this looks like an accident of an individual who was going through some type of mental breakdown or had some type of reaction to either drugs, narcotics, or prescription medication,” Budensiek said.

An autopsy was performed on July 22 and was inconclusive because they are waiting on toxicology reports, according to Budensiek.

Detectives are still trying to figure out how Okleshen got from the inn to the water. The last footage they have is him running along the Federal Highway Access Road.

“We’re still trying to find out how he ended up in the water and exactly what the cause of death was,” Budensiek said.

He said detectives have narrowed it down to about a 3 1/2-hour window that they do not know about, so they do not know how long he was in the water before deputies found him.
