Alaric Jackson was sidelined for part of the Los Angeles Rams’ offseason program after he was diagnosed with blood clots in his leg. It’s the second time in three years that he’s dealt with this health scare, which caused him to miss nine games in 2022.
Sean McVay provided an update on Jackson’s status Tuesday at the start of training camp and he had some encouraging news to share. He told reporters that Jackson won’t open camp on the PUP or NFI list, which means he’ll remain on the active roster and participate in practice.
McVay said Jackson will do “some individual drills” and jog-throughs, but he won’t take part in “the actual physical stuff” that the rest of the offensive line will do. Still, it’s good to hear Jackson will be on the field in some capacity.
“I do feel good about the plan we have in place that hopefully leads to him being able to go out there and compete with his teammates,” McVay said. “I know he is feeling good. He’s handled this like a total stud.”
As for his status to start the year, McVay isn’t ruling out the possibility that Jackson will be on the field in Week 1. He doesn’t want to set any expectations but there’s a chance he could be ready for the beginning of the regular season.
“I’m not going to rule anything out,” McVay said. “What I also don’t want to do is set expectations on something that we are in the process of learning. We have a plan in place that if things go according to plan, feel like that is a very real possibility. But again, this is the first time I’ve navigated anything like this with a player.
“We’re hopeful and optimistic but what I don’t want to do is set expectations when there’s a lot of things that could happen. But I think taking it a day at a time is going to be the right approach for all of us, from a mental perspective and physically for Alaric.”
Jackson missed minicamp in Maui while taking care of his health scare back home, but he’s ready to participate in training camp – even in a limited capacity. The Rams do have D.J. Humphries and David Quessenberry as backup plans after signing both veterans in the offseason, but the hope is that Jackson can remain their starting left tackle.
