Iowa basketball junior forward Álvaro Folgueiras erupted for his best performance of the 2025 FIBA U20 EuroBasket tournament on Sunday in the seventh-place game against Slovenia.
The 6-foot-9, 215-pound dynamic forward joined the Hawkeyes through the transfer portal this offseason from Robert Morris where he earned Horizon League Player of the Year honors last season.
Despite Spain’s eventual 77-75 loss to Slovenia, Folgueiras contributed a team-leading and game-high 28 points on 11-for-16 shooting from the field, 2-for-2 from 3-point territory, 4-for-6 from the free-throw line and a plus-46 scoring efficiency in 37:10 of playing time.
In addition to his impressive scoring performance, Folgueiras also registered a staggering 17 rebounds, nine assists, two steals, and one block as he nearly registered a triple-double.
Folgueiras finishes his seven-game tournament performance with an average of 11.9 points per game on 37% shooting from the floor, 21.4% from beyond the arc, and 66.7% from the charity stripe.
The Spaniard also closes his offseason international competition with an average of 9.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.
As the excitement for Iowa’s 2025-26 campaign increases by the day, Folgueiras will be a key factor for the Hawkeyes as they hope the towering forward can thrive this coming season.
Ironically, Iowa opens its 2025-26 season against Folgueiras’ former program with Robert Morris visiting Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Nov. 4.
