EVANSVILLE — That might be the longest qualifying round by definition in the history of the City Tournament.
The 2025 Romain Cadillac Evansville Men’s City Tournament field is finally set following a qualifier that stretched overnight due to a three-hour weather delay and a playoff halted by darkness. The final spots at Fendrich required seven players to return at 6:30 a.m. CT on Sunday, July 20.
It once again proves a point worth rehashing. Sometimes weird or interesting things always occur in this tournament.
A total of 66 spots in the main event were up for grabs over the weekend. The cut at Fendrich reached 3-over 73, resulting in a 10-man playoff for nine positions. Three advanced with a par on the first hole, and play was halted at 8:43 p.m. on Saturday. Andy Eble, Dru Henderson, Sam Key, William Osborn, Kyle Hodova,l and Jeff Rhymer claimed the final spots upon the restart.
Rhymer was the last playoff survivor with a par on the sixth overall hole, the par-4 17th. Tournament Director Bob Walther believes this is, upon his recollection, the second time the qualifier was finished on Sunday.
“Getting up early was tough, especially when you’re old,” Rhymer said. “I wish we could have gotten out of there sooner. It was nice to finally make some pars. This is the second time I’ve tried to do this and went out in a playoff last year at Helfrich. I kind of knew what to expect. I stayed focused. The most important action is the next action.”
The cut at Helfrich was 8-over 79. There was going to be a two-man playoff for one spot. However, Kameron Kingsbury earned a trip to the City Tournament by default when the other participant failed to return to the course in time.
Alex Turner of Newburgh fired the low round with a 7-under 63 at Fendrich. He had seven birdies and zero bogeys. Grant Saylor, the 2019 City runner-up, posted the best score at Helfrich with a 3-under 68.
