What to know about 'Good Trouble Lives On' protests in Michigan on July 17

Over 1,000 “Good Trouble” protests — akin to the No Kings protests — are scheduled to commence nationally on July 17, with around 60 planned across Michigan.

On Thursday, about 1,600 “Good Trouble Lives On,” protests will take place to stand against President Trump’s administration and continue the annual commemoration of the late congressman and civil rights activist John Lewis, who served in U.S. Congress representing Georgia for 33 years, and died in 2020.

“The civil rights leaders of the past have shown us the power of collective action,” the organization said on its website. “That’s why on July 17, five years since the passing of Congressman John Lewis, communities across the country will take to the streets, courthouses, and community spaces to carry forward his fight for justice, voting rights, and dignity for all.”

The protests are scheduled in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. All events are expected to uphold a commitment to nonviolent action, per organizers.

“We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events,” the organization said.

In Michigan, protests are planned in the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The events are held at varying hours of July 17.
