Over 70 “Good Trouble Lives On” protests are planned for Thursday, July 17 across New York state as many are expected to partake in the fifth annual John Lewis National Day of Action.
This year’s event is expected to surpass all previous years’ participation, organizers say, and features a flagship event held in Chicago, Illinois and additional anchor events in Georgia, Missouri, Maryland and California.
Here’s what to know.
‘Good Trouble’ protest planned for Thursday: What are the protests about?
According to the Good Trouble website, the nationwide protest is a response to what organizers say are attacks by the Trump administration on Americans’ civil and human rights.
Organizers said the focus of the protests is to demand an end to the administration’s crackdown on civil rights like voting, protesting and free speech, the targeting of Black and Brown Americans, immigrants, trans people through dangerous policies and the slashing of programs like Medicaid, SNAP and Social Security.
“We are facing the most brazen rollback of civil rights in generations,” the website states. “Whether you’re outraged by attacks on voting rights, the gutting of essential services, disappearances of our neighbors, or the assault on free speech and our right to protest — this movement is for you. Trump is trying to divide us, but we know the power of coming together.”
The phrase “good trouble” was coined by U.S. Congressman and civil rights activist John Lewis, who died in 2020.
A note at the bottom of the website states the Good Trouble events are “a commitment to nonviolent action.”
“We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events,” the note continues. “Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.”
