Former Lions QB Teddy Bridgewater suspended from Florida HS football team he now coaches

Former Detroit Lions quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who coached high school football at Miami Northwestern in Florida last season, has been suspended from coaching for allegedly providing benefits like rideshares and free meals to players.

Bridgewater confirmed the suspension via a Facebook post late Sunday, July 13. The former quarterback says the suspension came from the school, and it is unclear how long it is for.

Bridgewater played for 10 seasons in the NFL for six teams from 2014-2024, most prominently with the Minnesota Vikings from 2014-17. He played in one regular-season game as a backup for the Lions in 2023 before retiring from football, only to re-sign with the team on Dec. 26, 2024, ahead of the team’s playoff run.

He made one appearance in 2025 as a backup in the team’s 45-31 loss against the Washington Commanders in the divisional round.

Bridgewater coached his alma mater Miami Northwestern to a state championship in the 2024 season before returning to the Lions for his final NFL stint.

According to On3, the Florida High School Athletic Association is still investigating the allegation, which could lead to further punishment for Bridgewater or the program.
