Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the death of a 21-year-old Indianapolis man after his body was recovered in the Wabash River in Fountain County July 5.
The man was attempting to swim across the Wabash River when he suddenly disappeared beneath the water and did not resurface, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Local dispatchers received a call at 1:12 p.m. that the man had gone missing near the 2200 block of North Portland Arch Road, about five miles away from Covington, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Indiana Conservation Officers, Lafayette Fire Department, and the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office water rescue team deployed sonar equipment and boats in hopes of locating the man. Just after 5 p.m., the conservation officer eventually deployed several divers to recover the man’s body.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the exact cause of death is pending an autopsy, according to a report from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
