Portion of Ohio 39 to close
SUGARCREEK ‒ The Ohio Department of Transportation has announced Ohio 39 in Sugarcreek will be closed for five days, beginning July 7, while the Genessee & Wyoming Railroad completes necessary repairs to the rail crossing near Edelweiss Drive. The project is expected to be completed by July 11, weather permitting.
Butterfly exhibit at the Norma Johnson Center
DOVER − TuscParks will host Fran LeMaster’s traveling butterfly exhibit, All A Flutter, July 10-July 20, at the Norma Johnson Center. The exhibit will be held under the picnic shelter at 3645 Conservation Drive NW from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The exhibit allows visitors to step inside the enclosure and view several native Ohio butterflies up close. Chrysalises will also be on display, and hatchings will occur throughout the week inside the exhibit. Free crafts and face painting will be available. For a fee, visitors can purchase certain crafts and monarch chrysalis throughout the week while supplies last. Donations will be accepted at the door. Children younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Dover First Christian Church to mark 100 years
DOVER − Dover First Christian Church, 3029 N. Wooster Ave., will be celebrating its 100th anniversary July 12-13. A special worship service is planned for 10:45 a.m. July 13, with Ken Parrott, who served the church as pastor from 1966 to 2000. The church was founded July 12, 1925, at a meeting at the former Independent Order of Odd Fellows Hall on North Tuscarawas Avenue in Dover. For many years, the congregation worshipped at a church at 318 E. Fourth St. before moving to its present location in 1990.
Area blood drives scheduled
DOVER − The Ohio State Alumni Club of Tuscarawas County and the Tuscarawas County Young Democrats will host a blood donation event from 3 to 6 p.m. July 17, at the Dover library. The blood donations will be done by Vitalant, which provides the blood supply for the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital. Registration is requested, but walk-ins are welcome.
Another blood drive by Vitalant will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. July 14, at Dutch Valley Restaurant in Sugarcreek. Donors will be entered for a chance to win $30,000 toward the purchase of a car. Donors are asked to eat before donating. Bring a photo ID and a list of any medications. Appointments are recommended. DOVER − Massillon-based Daniel Muller, author of “Fighting for More Golden Years: Battling Disease and Embracing Hope after Age 65,” will be at the Dover Library at 6:30 p.m. July 10, to share his personal battle with leukemia, the mental challenges, how to self-advocate for treatment, how to choose a doctor, his lessons learned, how to handle anxiety, and the importance of hope and faith. A book signing will follow the program.

NEW PHILADELPHIA – A showing of “La La Land” will take place at 7 p.m. July 8, at the Performing Arts Center at Kent State Tuscarawas, 330 University Dr. NE. Tickets are $10 and includes popcorn.

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Those interested in genealogy can book a 90-minute session with a genealogist between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. July 16 or July 30, at the main library. Additionally, a program, The Find a Grave: Headstone Hunters, will be at 10 a.m. July 19, at the East Avenue Cemetery. COLUMBUS − The Ohio Department of Development and the Area Agency on Aging, Region 9 can help Ohio’s families stay cool during the hot summer months.
From July 1 through Sept. 30, income-eligible Ohioans can receive assistance in paying their electric bill, purchasing an air conditioner or fan, or making repairs to their central air conditioning unit through the Home Energy Assistance Summer Crisis Program (HEAP). It assists low-income households or those that have a disconnection notice, have been shut off, are trying to establish new service on their electric bill, require air conditioning, or those with a person 60 years or older living in the home who can provide physician documentation that cooling assistance is needed for their health.
