Deandre Ayton has reportedly agreed to sign with the Lakers

After a long search for help at the center position that has lasted a few years, the Los Angeles Lakers have apparently obtained a legitimate starter at that position.

On Sunday, Deandre Ayton agreed to a buyout of his contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. He was set to make $35.55 million for the 2025-26 season, but instead, he was set to become a free agent once he cleared waivers.

Immediately, speculation began that he was headed to the Lakers. Once he cleared waivers on Wednesday afternoon, he reportedly agreed to come to the Purple and Gold, per Shams Charania of ESPN.

Ayton averaged 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds a game this past season, and he has career averages of 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds a game over seven seasons. Many have had concerns about his effort and intensity level on the defensive end, especially since he isn’t a shot-blocker, but at the very least, he should give the Lakers a rim-running lob threat and a strong rebounder.
