Polish food, 5K, outdoor movie among 8 things to do this weekend in the Kewanee area

The weekend brings the Galva Freedom Fest, Coal Valley Boom Bash and St. Jude Golf Playday, along with fundraisers, Independence Day events, live music and more to the Kewanee area.

Galva Freedom Fest

What: Freedom Fest features a 5K run (8 a.m. Friday), a kickball tournament, parade (noon Friday), tractor pull, bounce houses, food vendors, face painting, dunk tank fundraiser, antique tractor show, fireworks and more. For $5 per square, you can paint the pavement (9 a.m. – noon Friday) at Wiley Park. All paint and brushes are provided. Enjoy lunch of sloppy Joes, hot dogs, chips cookies and beverages and homemade pie (11 a.m. -2:30 p.m. Friday) from First Baptist Church. Enjoy a pancake breakfast from 7-9 a.m. Friday from the Lions Club.

Cost: Both free and paid activities

Independence Day Polish Food

What: Get a Kielbasa sandwich on a bun (with or without sauerkraut) and three Pierogi.

When: 11 a.m. Friday, July 4

Where: Holy Trinity Parish Polish National Catholic Church, 716 N. Tremont St., Kewanee

Cost: $10; extra sandwich for $6; soda for $1

Pork in the Park

What: Enjoy grilled pork chops and patties with all the fixings from the Geneseo Kiwanis Club, plus music from Maple City Band & Isle of Flags (weather permitting).

When: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Friday, July 4

Where: Geneseo City Park, 140 W. Pearl St., Geneseo

St. Jude Golf Playday

What: Fee includes 18-holes, golf cart rental and pulled pork dinner. The event is for four-person teams, preferred ball (aka scramble). Hosted by St Jude Henry County/Stark County to Peoria Run. All proceeds benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

When: 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, July 5

Where: Midland Golf Club, 3536 Midland Road, Kewanee

Cost: $75 per person; $25 for dinner only

Outdoor Summer Movie Night

What: Come see a family-friendly movie outdoors on the big screen. The movie will be the PG-rated film, “Honey, I shrunk the Kids” from 1989. It runs an hour and 33 minutes. Gates open at 7 p.m., with the movie starting at dusk.

When: 7 p.m. Saturday, July 5

Where: Athletic Field, 541 E. North St., Geneseo

Cost: Free admission and popcorn

Coal Valley Boom Bash

What: Live music from local band Far Out 283 starts at 6 p.m. There will also be food trucks, beverages, entertainment, children’s activities, face painting by The Painted Dragon, magic and balloons by Jason Hamilton, and fireworks. Bring your lawn chairs.

When: 5-11 p.m. Saturday, July 5

Where: Municipal Park, 1000 First St., Coal Valley

Titan Golf Outing

What: The fourth annual Red, White and Blue Golf Outing benefits Annawan and Wethersfield Titan Football, Track and both Booster Clubs. It is a four-person scramble. Check in at 11 a.m. Shotgun start is at noon. There will be putting and chipping contests all afternoon plus drinks and music on the patio. Dinner is available from 5-7 p.m. and a raffle drawing will be at 7 p.m.

When: 11 a.m. Sunday, July 6

Where: Midland Golf Club, 3536 Midland Road, Kewanee

Cost: $75; $300 per team

Coral Moons

What: Emerson Woolf & The Wishbones perform at 6 p.m. The band blends soulful lyricism with rootsy Americana and indie rock flair. The band delivers heartfelt narratives wrapped in lush harmonies, warm guitar tones and a touch of vintage twang. Known for their captivating live shows and poetic songwriting, The Wishbones carve out a sound that’s both nostalgic and refreshingly original. Coral Moons takes the stage at 7:15 p.m. Coral Moons is an indie pop band that formed on the shores of Boston and recently relocated to the woods of Upstate New York. The concert is for all ages. Bring lawn chairs/blankets. Food and non-food vendors will be on-site.

When: 6-10 p.m. Sunday, July 6

Where: Levitt AMP at Wiley Park, 301 N.W. Fourth Ave., Galva

Bandits on the Run

What: Bandits on the Run is an indie-folk-pop-americana outfit consisting of three lead singers, a guitar, a cello, a suitcase drum, an accordion and various toy instruments. They hail from Brooklyn, NY and are known for their vivacious performance style, genre-defying sound, soaring harmonies and ability to make music-magic happen everywhere from subway platforms to concert halls. They perform at 7 p.m. Come for the optional potluck/social hour at 6 p.m.; plates, bowls, silverware, napkins and serving spoons are provided. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. The show is for all ages and is family-friendly. Rain location is Bishop Hill Creative Commons.

When: 8 p.m. – midnight Monday, July 7

Where: Ca D’Zan House Concerts, 411 S Road, Cambridge

Cost: Suggested donation of $20-$30

Mosaic Art Workshop

What: Get creative and make something unique in this hands-on session. Learn the basics of mosaic art: choosing colors, shaping pieces and designing your own creation. Whether you’re into abstract patterns, symbols or nature-inspired designs, you’ll take home a one-of-a-kind work of art. All materials are provided; no experience is needed. For 6th through 12th graders.

When: 1-2 p.m. Monday, July 7

Where: Community room, Kewanee Public Library District, 102 S. Tremont St., Kewanee

Recipe Round-Up

What: The Recipe Round-Up group meets on the second Tuesday of each month. Bring a dish to pass and copies of the recipe to share.  Meetings are open to the public. The theme for July is Crockpot Meals.

When: noon – 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 8

Where: Kewanee Public Library District, 102 S. Tremont St., Kewanee

Cost: Free

Ice Cream Social

What: Enjoy an old-fashioned ice cream social in support of a great cause. The Henry County Humane Society-Geneseo will be serving up pie, cake, cookies and ice cream.

When: 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 8

Wednesday Night Concert Series

What: Come support a band on the rise, “Cats and Dragons” at this live music concert.

When: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9

Where: Central Bank Pavilion, 218 N. State St., Geneseo

Cost: Free

Summer Concert Series

What: The Kewanee Chamber summer concert series continues with Missy Vail & Friends performing July 10. The food stand opens at 5 p.m., with the concert starting at 6:30 p.m. Bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Where: Veterans Park, 313 N. Burr St., Kewanee

Cost: Free admission

Community Paint Night

What: Unleash your creativity at this event that is open to all ages and perfect for the whole family. Paint some pigs in celebration of our town’s favorite tradition: Hog Days. Kids can enter their pig masterpiece for a chance to win the Paint Night Prize Pack and have their winning design turned into a custom t-shirt. The business’ team will proudly wear it in this year’s Hog Days parade.

When: 4-6 p.m. Thursday, July 10

Relay for Life Fundraiser

What: Help raise money for Henry-Stark Relay for Life with your pizza purchases. Relay For Life will receive $5 for a large, $4 for a medium or $3 for a small pizza. Dine in or carry out.

Where: Happy Joe’s Pizza & Ice Cream, 515 Tenney St., Kewanee
