SAULT STE. MARIE — Residents and visitors alike came out to celebrate the 170th birthday of the Soo Locks on Friday, June 27 at the annual Engineers Day event.
Engineers Day honors the history of the locks and the engineers who helped create them, as well as the members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who maintain and operate the locks today. This year marks the 170th anniversary of the Soo Locks, which first opened in 1855, and the 250th anniversary of the Army Corps of Engineers, which can be traced back to June 16, 1775.
Due to safety concerns, people could not walk across the locks as they have been able to do in previous years, but people could still see the locks in action from the viewing area and visitors center. The city also hosted activities up and down Portage Avenue and in front of city hall, including vendors, performers, and an arts and crafts show.
