Fire destroys vacant modular home in Clay Township; law enforcement investigating cause

CLAY TOWNSHIP ‒ A one-story wood frame modular home at 6867 Kinsey Valley Road SW, about three miles northwest of Gnadenhutten, was completely destroyed by an early morning fire on June 30.

No one was injured. The residence had been vacant for several months.

Firefighters were dispatched at 1:39 a.m. The first arriving units found the structure engulfed in flames and completely collapsed, according to a press release from Steven Wright, chief of the Arrowhead Joint Fire District in Gnadenhutten.

A neighbor reported the fire after being awakened by a power outage and noticing a bright orange glow outside. The neighbors were able to verify that no one was inside the structure, Wright said.

It took firefighters about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control. Firefighters then worked for approximately two hours to extinguish hot spots, he said.

No damage estimates are available at this time, and the building was not insured.

Gnadenhutten was assisted by firefighters from the Delaware Valley Joint Fire District in Port Washington and the Warwick Township Volunteer Fire Department.

What caused the fire?

An investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is being led by the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Video footage recovered from a neighboring property shows multiple vehicles passing by on nearby Kinsey Valley Road around the time the fire was believed to have started. If anyone has information which may help investigators determine the cause of the fire, they are asked to contact the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office at 330-339-2000.
