Adrian Public Schools considers 0.75-mill proposal for community rec center

The Adrian Public Schools Board of Education will make a final decision July 28 on whether to ask voters to approve a 0.75-mill ballot proposal to fund a community recreation center in November.

The board approved an application for the millage proposal June 21 in order to continue preliminary work on the concept that’s been ongoing for the past two years.

“Many communities have built similar facilities,” Athletic Director Chad O’Brien wrote in a release. “This is Adrian’s opportunity to create a recreational space for our residents and students.”

The district began soliciting input from students and the community during the 2024-2025 school year. The millage would generate about $27.5 million in revenue. Estimated costs to build the center came in between $22 million and $27.5 million.

“Based on the feedback from our community engagement, (it’s) been determined (there’s) support to take this proposal to the voters,” wrote Superintendent Nate Parker.

The center is expected to stretch over 80,000 square feet with a turf field, multi-purpose courts, a track, fitness center, golf simulator, batting cages and a 2,500-square-foot common area.

Administrative costs associated with the facility, should the millage pass and the building be constructed, would be covered by rental fees, events and membership fees, according to Parker.

The board will take up the issue again July 28 for discussion and a vote. If approved, APS will host a series of forums and Q&A meetings to inform voters of the plan.
