Insider pours cold water on LeBron James trade speculation

LeBron James let it be known on Sunday that he will be exercising his player option for the 2025-26 season. That means he will remain a member of the Los Angeles Lakers — at least for now.

But his agent, Rich Paul, issued a public statement about James picking up that player option, and some of the language in that statement is making people think James will or could demand a trade.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”

The Lakers now revolve around Luka Doncic, not James, and plenty of Lakers fans are seemingly rejoicing at the mere notion of the NBA’s all-time leading career scorer leaving the team very soon.

But NBA insider Sam Amick poured cold water on that notion by pointing out that the Lakers aren’t far off from championship contention and that if James wants another championship, his best bet is to stay in L.A.

Via The Athletic:

“For LeBron’s purposes, the tricky part is that the grass isn’t always greener somewhere else (and even if it is, it’s not quite as easy to get there as it was so many years ago),” Amick wrote. “While the Lakers aren’t title contenders at the moment — as their first-round flameout against the Minnesota Timberwolves made clear — there’s reason to believe that a full season with Dončić, James, [Austin] Reaves and all the rest of their holdovers will lead to significant growth.

“Add in that LeBron gets to play another season with his son Bronny, all while living in his preferred location in Los Angeles, and there are all sorts of reasons for him to ride this out with a smile on his face and simply figure out how he feels about his hoops future a year from now. Especially considering his remarkable legacy is already set in stone.”

With 3-and-D forward Dorian Finney-Smith turning down the player option on his contract for next season, L.A.’s roster could look somewhat different next season. There is speculation that center Deandre Ayton, who agreed to a buyout of his contract with the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday, could be joining them, and there could be more unexpected moves ahead.

Perhaps the statement Paul issued and the decision James made on Sunday are simply a matter of James putting pressure on the Lakers to upgrade their roster enough, which is something James has allegedly done with his teams in the past.

As always, one can never really be sure what to expect from James moving forward.
