One man is dead after a vehicle crash downtown led to a fatal shooting near the Indianapolis Community Justice Campus on June 29, according to Indianapolis police.
Shortly before 3 p.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of a person shot at 3515 Southeastern Avenue.
When police arrived, they found two vehicles near a wooded area and one man who had been shot, according to IMPD public information officer William Young.
The man was transported to a hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. He was identified by the Marion County Coroner’s Office as Billy Ray McKinney, 53.
Police detained a person of interest at the scene and believe that all individuals involved with the shooting have been accounted for. That person was later released.
Police said they believe that this shooting was connected to a car crash reported in the 800 block of Massachusetts Avenue in downtown Indianapolis earlier in the afternoon.
The death was the sixth homicide of the weekend, and police are urging residents not to resort to gun violence when resolving issues with one another.
“This was totally preventable,” Young said.
“Those who are thinking about picking up a firearm, you will be held accountable. When you do that, not only are you hurting the victim’s families, you’re hurting your family,” Young said.
