Crews battling a vegetation fire in south Redding that burned more than 20 acres Sunday afternoon made good progress on the blaze that had prompted evacuations in nearby neighborhoods.
Just after 10 p.m., the Redding Police Department lifted the evacuation order that was affecting residents whose homes and property were closest to the path of the Kenyon Fire.
The Kenyon Fire was dispatched just after 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of Kenyon Drive.
Ninety minutes later, after a flurry of evacuation warnings, firefighters reported to dispatchers they were releasing some fire engines and aircraft that were battling the fire.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said the fire burned 26 acres as of 3 p.m. Sunday. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
Redding Fire Prevention Officer Corey Welch said the fire damaged a house and outbuilding on Enchanted Way and Rocky Ridge Court. He said there were no reported injuries.
The fire quickly grew to about 10 acres with a moderate rate of spread, according to the fire tracking app Watch Duty. Smoke from the fire could be seen as far north as the city of Shasta Lake.
Just before 2:30 p.m., firefighters told dispatchers that the fire was around 15 acres with a moderate rate of spread. But crews were able to protect homes in the area with retardant dropped from air crews and firefighters on the ground.
The fire prompted evacuations on Riviera Drive from Memory Lane to Oak Glen Drive, Watch Duty said. Officials issued evacuation orders for zone COR-434.
There were evacuation warnings for zones COR-431, COR-432, COR-433 and COR-435, but they were lifted around 3:45 p.m., according to Redding Police.
Traffic was turned around at the intersection of Cedars Road and Kenyon, Redding Police said. Other road closures were Oak Glen Drive at Riviera Drive; Cedars Road at Riviera Drive; and El Reno Lane at Cedars Road.
