Holmes County is the home to one of the best buffets in the nation.
Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen in Mt. Hope — located in Ohio’s Amish Country — placed sixth on USA TODAY’s 10BEST list of best buffet restaurants. The rankings were released June 25.
Mrs. Yoder’s was the only Ohio site to make the list.
Restaurant founder Gloria Yoder is a Mount Hope native after whom the restaurant is named. Her son, Trent, and his business partner, Robert Burkholder, have continued the tradition of providing traditional homestyle cooking, such as broiled roast beef, Gloria’s famous fried chicken, noodles and mashed potatoes, along with a tasty selection of other delicious delights.
Burkholder said it was quite a treat to learn of the USA TODAY recognition.
“It’s kind of a win-win for us,” Burkholder said. “It’s nice to remind people we’re here. Many of our regulars saw the write-up, plus others have come in and said they wanted to check us out because of the article they saw. We try to stay as authentic as we can. That is our goal. We think of ourselves as homestyle cooking. We peel our potatoes and make our mashed potatoes from scratch.”
What makes Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen special?
The restaurant offers a unique buffet experience featuring high quality local meat and produce.
“From our homestyle dinners to our hearty lunch and dinner buffet, you won’t go hungry at Mrs. Yoder’s,” according to its website. “Our famous buffet is best known for the fried chicken, perfectly crispy and made fresh every day. Items change regularly, but you’ll always find Amish favorites like homemade mashed potatoes, noodles, fresh vegetables, and a salad bar!”
Wooster Daily Record staff writer Kevin Lynch recently reviewed the restaurant. He noted that the cost for the buffet lunch or dinner is $17.
“My favorite is the broiled roast beef, so tender and juicy you don’t even need a knife,” he wrote. “I also had a piece of breaded cod that was meaty and quite tasty. Mrs. Yoder’s chicken lived up to its billing, and the mashed potatoes were whipped to perfection.”
The dining spot also has made waves in the area, with many positive Google reviews.
“Mrs. Yoder’s may not be the biggest buffet in the area, but I can say everything on the buffet is good,” one reviewer writes. “There is not one item that we tried and did not like.”
“This restaurant holds a special place in my heart,” another reviewer writes. “Best chicken in Ohio. And their desserts?! Absolutely amazing.”
