The first slight chance of rain appears in the forecast for Wednesday, June 25. Chances rise slightly for Thursday, with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m.

Head advisory, air quality alert issued

The region is under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Wednesday. People are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Try to limit outside activities to the cooler times – early morning or later in the evening. Wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothing and be alert to signs of heat illness, according to the National Weather Service.

The air quality alert has been issued as ozone within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards.

When will it cool down?

Highs are expected to drop below the 95-degree mark on Thursday, when rain chances start to increase. Highs will be in the mid- to lower 90s through the weekend.

What temperature should you set the thermostat?

Trying to stay cool without blowing the budget could be a balancing act.

According to reporting by USA Today, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends keeping temperatures inside comfortable and at a level that controls for humidity. People should also try to lower the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures to help save money.

Energy Star, an Environmental Protection Agency program promoting energy efficiency, recommends setting ACs to 78 degrees for comfort and efficiency when you wake up. Energy companies, including in Missouri, Maryland and Florida, recommend thermostats at 78 degrees during summer months.
