NEW CONCORD − Muskingum University President Susan S. Hasseler will retire in the summer of 2026, according to an announcement from the university.
The Muskingum University Board of Trustees appointed her as president in Feb. 29, 2016. She became the 21st president of the university on July 1, 2016. She replaced Dr. Anne C. Steele, who served the university for 16 years.
During her tenure, Hasseler has led Muskingum through a period of strategic advancement, significantly expanding the university’s regional influence and enhancing its capacity to serve a diverse and evolving student population.
The university also strengthened partnerships with local businesses, school districts, and community organizations, secured major grant funding to expand scholarships, career development programs, and technology infrastructure, while also launching new degree programs that respond to the needs of tomorrow’s workforce.
“It has been the greatest privilege of my professional life to serve as president of Muskingum University,” Hasseler said in the announcement. “I am incredibly proud of all we have accomplished together − and even more excited about the strong foundation we’ve built for the university’s next era of impact.”
One of the many highlights of her presidency was the opening of the Bullock Health and Wellness Complex, a multi-use, academic, athletic, and recreational facility that serves both the campus and the broader community. In addition, Muskingum has significantly enhanced its STEM offerings, expanded programs for adult and graduate learners, and reinforced its long-standing mission of educational access and opportunity.
The Board of Trustees will launch a national search for the next president.
“President Hasseler has led with vision, integrity, and a deep belief in the transformative power of higher education,” Board Chair Cheryl Carpenter said in the announcement. “She will leave the university positioned for a vibrant and dynamic future, and we remain profoundly grateful for her extraordinary leadership.”
