Some Indianapolis community spaces will be open so residents can stay cool ahead of a stretch of extreme heat. Those who do not have air conditioning are especially encouraged to visit, the city said.
Fifteen park buildings across Indianapolis will be open for cooling beginning June 21. Four will be open for extended hours from noon to 6 p.m. on June 22, when they would usually be closed.
Officials have been preparing as Indianapolis is expected to experience heat indices of up to 103 degrees until June 24, the city said. Mayor Joe Hogsett encouraged the public to check in on their neighbors, and the city asked residents not to forget those who are unhoused and at an increased risk for heat-related illness.
Indianapolis also has pools and splash pads which will be open over the summer to beat the heat.
