A Tracy man who broke into a bedroom where two children were sleeping was arrested and later found to be in possession of 3,000 images of child sexual abuse material, police said.
Jevon Jennings, 27, was arrested after Tracy police responded June 3 to a report of a residential burglary involving two children under 14.
Police said Jennings, dressed in all black, entered the children’s bedroom in the middle of the night and fled before officers arrived.
Evidence left at the scene led detectives with the Tracy Police Department’s General Investigations Unit to identify Jennings as the suspect, and he was arrested.
During the investigation, detectives discovered Jennings was in possession of more than 3,000 images of child sexual abuse material and had been distributing them online, according to police.
Jennings was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of burglary and possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material, police said.
“This arrest is a testament to the relentless dedication of our detectives,” Capt. Luis Mejia said. “Breaking into a child’s bedroom is beyond disturbing, and the additional crimes discovered during this investigation only underscore the danger this individual posed to the community.”
Police said the victims in the case were not physically harmed.
The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office charged Jennings on June 13 with five felonies, including assault to commit a felony during first-degree burglary with intent to commit rape, sodomy or oral copulation; first-degree residential burglary with a person present; two counts of possession and distribution of more than 600 images of child sexual abuse material, including 10 images of children under 12; and distribution of child sexual abuse material.
DA officials said Jennings has a prior conviction for misdemeanor peeping.
Prosecutors said Jennings was seen on surveillance footage tampering with a camera, cutting a window screen and entering the children’s bedroom. One of the children woke up to Jennings rummaging through her belongings and saw multiple flashes, possibly from a cellphone. He fled after a cellphone rang, prosecutors said.
“Jevon Jennings’ predatory behavior — stalking a minor and invading her home with malicious intent — is an affront to our community’s safety,” San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas said. “His possession and distribution of vile child pornography only deepen our resolve to ensure he faces the harshest consequences.”
