In the midst of a long and winding offseason for Iowa baseball, the Hawkeyes made a splash in the transfer portal by adding right-handed starting pitcher Logan Runde from Florida International on Sunday.
The 6-foot-1 native of Peosta, Iowa, played two seasons with the Panthers after joining the program following two years at Kirkwood Community College. In Runde’s tenure at FIU, he has a record of 7-5 with a 5.06 ERA in 14 starts through 33 appearances. Runde also finishes his FIU career with 87 strikeouts, 33 base-on-balls, and a batting average against of .309 in 94 1/3 innings pitched.
For Rick Heller and the Hawkeyes, adding another starter to the mix could be a game-changer for preserving the health of Iowa’s weekend starting three pitchers in Cade Obermueller, Aaron Savary, and Reece Beuter.
If Iowa can work on getting Runde to become more of a “swing-and-miss” type of pitcher in the offseason, the Hawkeyes could have another weapon in the rotation entering next season.
