An episode of a new true crime series featuring Brittanee Drexel – the Chili teenager who was killed in 2009 while on spring break in Myrtle Beach – will air Tuesday night.
The episode titled “Missing in Myrtle Beach” features Brittanee, who was 17 and a Gates Chili High School student when she was abducted, raped and murdered while on a spring break trip she took without her parents’ knowledge or permission.
Tuesday’s episode is part of a new series “Fatal Destination” that premiered earlier this month on Investigation Discovery.
When does the episode air?
The hourlong episode featuring Brittanee is set to air at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17. Episodes will also be available to stream on Max.
After the show airs, it will be posted on show’s website, with the series’ other episodes that have already aired.
Who is in the episode?
Actress Jessica Biel serves as both narrator and executive producer for all shows in the series, including the June 17 episode that features Brittanee.
The episode includes interviews with Brittanee’s relatives and friends, including her father Chad Drexel, and investigators about the search for the Chili teenager that spanned more than 13 years.
In the episode, Investigator Phil Hanna of the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office and Capt. Kin McKenzie of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division explain how officers zeroed in on Raymond Moody, the man who in 2022 admitted to kidnapping and murdering Brittanee Drexel.
The episode also features 15th Circuit Solicitor Jimmy Richardson, who prosecuted the case, and Brittanee’s friends Tarah Friedman and Casey Capo were also interviewed and featured.
Years of not knowing
When Brittanee disappeared in 2009, her family didn’t initially know she had traveled to Myrtle Beach with friends. She vanished three days into the trip, on April 25.
The last image of the teen was security camera footage of her walking out of a Myrtle Beach motel wearing a multicolored shirt, black shorts and flip-flops.
During the years that passed, Brittanee’s family worked tirelessly to find her. The journey included many detours, including a significant police investigation into a suspect in 2016 who, as was later shown with Moody’s arrest and subsequent confession, had nothing to do with the crime.
In 2016, court documents revealed that a jailhouse informant told investigators that Brittanee was abducted, gang-raped, shot to death and thrown into an alligator-infested swamp. Those allegations, later discovered to be false, prompted a renewed and unsuccessful search for Brittanee’s remains.
In 2022 federal and South Carolina authorities arrested and convicted Moody, more than 13 years after Brittanee’s disappearance. In court, Moody admitted he killed Brittanee, saying, “I was a monster when I took Brittanee Drexel’s life.”
A violent sex offender who had served 21 years in prison in California for earlier crimes, Moody was questioned not long after Brittanee’s disappearance but police then had no evidence to connect him to Brittanee’s whereabouts.
Moody, who was 62 when he was arrested, led police to Brittanee’s body, about 35 miles south of Myrtle Beach.
