Palm Beach Town Council to review two State Road A1A road projects at upcoming meeting

State transportation officials are scheduled to brief the Palm Beach Town Council on June 10 about a pair of roadwork projects on the island.

Representatives of the Florida Department of Transportation will present an update on the projects, which are taking place on State Road A1A, also known as South Ocean Boulevard, South County Road or Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway.

One extends from south of Lake Avenue to north of Ibis Way, and the other is just south of the Southern Boulevard traffic circle and President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club, to south of Royal Palm Way. The presentation is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Town Hall.

FDOT contractors began work on the project in the South End on May 3, according to town documents.

The project spans about 2.1 miles of South Ocean Boulevard and will remain under construction until the summer of 2026. The Stout Group will lead the $5.96 million project, FDOT said.

The segment of South Ocean also will be milled and repaved, with a wider bike lane and new pavement markings for bicyclists where space permits.

Pedestrian signals at South Ocean Boulevard and Lake Avenue will be upgraded to LED lights, a new mast arm will be installed for the traffic light at the Par 3 Golf Course, and crews will add a flashing beacon at Phipps Ocean Park.

Additionally, the asphalt sidewalk on the west side of South Ocean Boulevard will be replaced with concrete, and drainage enhancements are planned throughout the area.

Work will occur in phases to minimize impacts to the public, FDOT said. Lane closures will initially run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. During season — from the Monday before Thanksgiving through April 30 — they’ll shift to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except within 800 feet of Lake Avenue, where closures are permitted overnight from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

FDOT began work on the Midtown project May 27, according to town documents.

Construction on the 2.3-mile portion of State Road A1A — which runs along South County Road from south of Royal Palm Way to where it becomes South Ocean Boulevard, and then down past Southern Boulevard — is scheduled for completion in late 2026, according to FDOT’s project website.

Halley Engineering Contractors, the project’s contractor, plans to mill and repave the road, upgrade pedestrian signals to LEDs, improve drainage near Southern Boulevard and Royal Palm Way, update curb ramps, replace sections of sidewalk, and modify pavement markings, including bike lanes.

The project, with an $8.25 million budget, also includes the replacement of traffic signals with decorative mast arms at Hammon, Worth and Peruvian avenues, and with skirted mast arms at the Central Fire Station and at Southern Boulevard and Royal Palm Way, FDOT said.

The timing for lane closures is the same as the South End project, FDOT said.

As part of their presentation, FDOT officials will request a waiver for extended construction hours on both projects to help reduce traffic disruptions and improve pedestrian safety, according to town documents.

Also at the meeting, the Town Council will:

Council members will meet at 9:30 a.m. June 10 at Town Hall for their regular meeting. They also meet at 9:30 a.m. June 11 for their local planning agency meeting; and at 9:45 a.m. June 11 for development review. Members of the public can participate in person or via Zoom. Those wishing to make public comments virtually can access the Zoom link on the town’s Meeting Audio page.
