COLUMBUS — It’s championship Saturday at the OHSAA state track and field meet.
Finals races will be held in all three divisions today at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, with five field events in Divison II and all the Division I field events taking place.

Twinsburg’s 1,600 relays close OHSAA state meet with All-Ohio finishes
Twinsburg finished the Division I state track meet in perfect fashion by putting both of its 1,600 relays on the podium.
In the girls race, the Twinsburg quartet of Nicole Smith, Autumn Besett, Brooke Jones and Teighlor Humbert finished fifth with a time of 3:53.19.
In the boys relay, Twinsburg’s Sam Taneja, Isaiah Calloway, Steffon Mosley and Sam Hopp broke their own school record. The Tigers finished seventh in 3:17.56.

Hudson’s Ryder Kessick shatters personal record in 3,200
Hudson senior Ryder Kessick put up his best high school race in his final race.
Breaking his personal record by 11 seconds, Kessick finished seventh in the 3,200 in 9:03.55.
Nordonia’s Sarah Marchant earns All-Ohio spot in pole vault
Nordonia’s pole vault legacy continues at the state meet.
After taking eighth place last year, Nordonia’s Sarah Marchant moved up a spot. She cleared 12 feet to seventh place, just missing setting a new personal record.
Twinsburg’s Sam Hopp, Highland’s Ty Sgambati earn All-Ohio honors in 800
The 800 has been the best event for Greater Akron today, as Twinsburg’s Sam Hopp and Highland’s Ty Sgambati each earned All-Ohio honors in Division I.
Hopp finished fifth in a 1:52.87, setting a personal record, while Sgambati finished eighth in 1:53.
Hopp’s teammate Nicole Smith also earned her first All-Ohio place. The Twinsburg sophomore took eighth in the 300 hurdles in 43.85.
Revere’s Will Wells finishes fifth in Division I 1,600
Revere’s Will Wade the most of his first trip to the Division state meet.
Wells staying in the pack in the 1,600 and made his move late, passing several runners in the last lap to finish fifth in a personal best time of 4:13.96.
Also, Walsh Jesuit’s 400 relay set a new school record of 42.12 to finish in seventh.
Green’s Mike Schaal places fifth in OHSAA Division I discus
Just a year after picking up the sport, Green’s Mike Schaal can call himself an All-Ohioan in discus.
On the first throw of the competition, Schaal heaved a distance of 171 feet, 5 inches. The throw held up, giving him fifth place.
CVCA 1,600 relay places eighth to close out Division II meet
Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy made it 5-for-5 in terms of All-Ohio finishes its athletes completed.
The Royals quartet of Ramon Wilson, Tommy Kopec, Isaac Solomon and Joey Kopec finished eighth in the 1,600 relay, posting a season best time of 3:21.59.
Division II competition is complete. Track final for Division I will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Buchtel’s Shade, CVCA’s Solomon earn All-Ohio places in 800
Greater Akron’s fingerprints were all over the Division II boys 800 race.
Buchtel’s Dwight Shade peaked at the right time, running a huge personal best time of 1:54.4 to finish fourth. CVCA’s Isaac Solomon also ran a personal best, finishing seventh in 1:54.82.
Woodridge’s Marissa Boone is runner-up in 800
Marissa Boone saved her best race for last.
The Woodridge senior showed off a great finishing kick in the 800, passing several runners in the final lap to finish second in 2:12.55.
It took a new state meet record to keep Boone away from gold, as Valley View’s Addy Abner won the race in 2:07.54
CVCA’s Joelle Cherry finishes runner-up in 300 hurdles
Joelle Cherry chose an opportune time to run the best race of her life.
Cherry ran a clean race in the 300 hurdles, finishing second in a school-record time of 43.86
Buchtel’s Miniya Mitchell earns All-Ohio place in 400
After rough week at the regional meet, Buchtel’s Miniya Mitchell bounced back in style at state.
Mitchell earned her first All-Ohio finish in the 400, taking sixth place in a fast field. Mitchell finished in a personal record time of 56.9
Woodridge’s Marissa Boone finishes fourth in 1,600
Woodridge’s Marissa Boone is 2-for-2 in All-Ohio finishes.
In the Division II girls 1,600-meter run, Boone found herself boxed in the middle of the pack for the first two laps. However, she was able to break out, passing several runners to finish fourth in 4:54.12.
Hudson’s Drake Vander Cica finishes third in shot put
Hudson’s record thrower can call himself an All-Ohioan.
Drake Vander Cica tossed a throw of 58 feet, 2 inches in his first throw of the Division I boys shot put. Vander Cica did not improve on that throw, but it was good for third place, earning him his first All-Ohio spot.
CVCA’s Kylee Zamecnik, Niles Nuru earn All-Ohio honors
For the third straight year, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy’s Kylee Zamecnik scored a podium finish in the Division II girls long jump.
Zamecnik’s best jump was her fourth attempt, as she cleared 17 feet, 11 inches. She fouled on her final two jumps attempting to clear 18 feet, but her best jump earned her third place.
Meanwhile in the Division II boys high jump, CVCA’s Niles Nuru earned his first All-Ohio spot. He cleared 6 feet 4 and finished in fourth place due to fewer attempts.
The Division I field events will being at noon with Division II track finals starting at 1 p.m.
What is the schedule for Day 2 of the OHSAA state track meet?
Division III track finals will begin at 9:30 a.m.
In Division II, the five field events (boys discus, boys high jump, girls long jump, girls shot put and girls pole vault) will begin at 9:30 a.m. Final track event will begin at 1 p.m.
In Division I, field events will begin at noon with the second round of field events at 3 p.m. Track finals will begin at 4:40 p.m.
For Greater Akron, the morning session will begin with two Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy field athletes. Niles Nuru will compete in the Division II boys high jump, while Kylee Zamecnik will compete in the girls long jump.
