STUART — A Stuart man is in jail on charges related to the sexual abuse to an animal, according to a Stuart Police Department press release.
Charges: Tyler McElroy, 26, of Stuart, was arrested and charged with tormenting, depriving, mutilating, or killing an animal, knowingly engaging in sexual contact with an animal, and 10 counts of knowingly filming, distributing, or possessing images or videos involving a person and an animal, according to Stuart Police.
McElroy was taken into custody on June 5 and is in the Martin County Jail without bond.
What happened: On May 31, the Stuart Police Department received a report of suspected sexual abuse of a dog by its owner. Detectives began an investigation and executed a search warrant at a Stuart residence on June 5.
During the search, detectives found two dogs and other evidence inside the home. The dogs were removed from the property and taken to Martin County Animal Control, where they are undergoing an evaluation by a veterinarian.
The investigation is still active and McElroy could possibly receive additional charges, according to police. They said there is no evidence any animals were killed.
