Pellston to host inaugural 3-on-3 basketball tournament for boys and girls on July 19

PELLSTON – Jared Anderson’s only just getting started in his new coaching gig.

But the first-year Pellston varsity boys basketball coach is bringing an event to his hometown that he hopes will receive a huge turnout.

On Saturday, July 19, Pellston High School will be hosting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for both high school and middle school boys and girls of different age groups.

“I think we’re in a great spot in Pellston,” Anderson said. “The other reason we thought it would be a great idea is that we’re kind of centrally located between Petoskey, Cheboygan and the Mackinaw City/St. Ignace grouping, so we’re hoping we can pull some more of the communities together and see the local basketball players from those main areas but also further out, towards Onaway and towards Indian River, because they aren’t that far out of our way.”

According to Anderson, the first-time event will feature four divisions with different age groups ranging from middle school to high school kids. As far as registration goes, the cost is $80 per team, with each team getting a guarantee of three games. All proceeds will benefit the Pellston boys basketball program.

Anderson said around five or six teams have signed up so far, but he’s expecting more.

“I’d like to have up to 50, but I’m shooting for the 30-ish range between middle school and high school teams, that we can have a decent tournament, a decent turnout, but also get through it all in a day, have a good time,” Anderson said.

While competitive basketball is important, Anderson thinks of the tournament as a way for those around the surrounding communities to bond and enjoy an exciting day on the court.

“Hopefully we can get a lot of kids from all over the area to come and play, see each other, get to know each other, and when they get onto the basketball court in the winter, they’re all friends and can talk about it and have a good time together,” Anderson said.

To register, people can scan the QR code of the flyer for event, check the Pellston High School website calendar for information, or contact Anderson at janderson@pellstonschools.org
