Iowa football 2025 schedule details: Cy-Hawk rivalry and other kickoff times announced

IOWA CITY — The 2025 Cy-Hawk rivalry between Iowa football and Iowa State on Sept. 6 is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. (CT).

Several other kickoff times were also announced on May 29 for Iowa’s 2025 season.

The Hawkeyes’ first two home games of the season — against Albany (Week 1) and UMass (Week 3) — are set to kick off in the evening.

The Big Ten opener, which comes on the road against Rutgers, will be played on a Friday, rather than a Saturday. That means Iowa will have less rest than between the UMass and Rutgers games. But that also gives the Hawkeyes extra time between the Rutgers game and the following week’s matchup against Indiana.

The regular-season finale against Nebraska on Black Friday will be an early start.

Here’s a look at the details: (listed in Central Time):

In the league’s second football season with four former Pac-12 programs, Iowa is expected to face the harsh reality of the modern Big Ten. The Hawkeyes play three teams that made last season’s College Football Playoff — Indiana, Penn State and Oregon. But Iowa has the benefit of playing each of those games at Kinnick Stadium, a venue that the Hawkeyes are 12-2 combined across the last two seasons.

There is some cautious optimism about the Hawkeyes entering the 2025 season, but also legitimate question marks. Iowa lost major production on the defensive side of the ball with the departures of Jay Higgins, Nick Jackson, Sebastian Castro and others. Kaleb Johnson, one of the best running backs in program history, moved on to the professional level after three seasons with the program.

But Iowa is entering the second season under offensive coordinator Tim Lester, who helped orchestrate sizeable gains on that side of the ball in 2024. There is belief that the Hawkeyes can make another jump in 2025. Two-time FCS national champion quarterback Mark Gronowski, who transferred from South Dakota State, is among those who could be integral in making that happen.

Iowa is less than 100 days away from the opening kickoff of its 2025 season.
