Rockford Fire Department investigators are working to determine what caused a fatal fire about 6:18 a.m. Monday, May 12, at 3912 Preston St.
A 46-year-old woman was killed in the fire that appeared to start in a downstairs bedroom of the house located on the city’s far westside, Rockford Fire Division Chief Luis Duran said.
It displaced two other residents who had been alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and were able to escape, Duran said.
Rockford firefighters arrived within four minutes of dispatch to find heavy fire coming from the rear of the house, according to a news release.
Thirty firefighters responded to the call in addition to a chaplain, fire investigators, Rockford building department personnel and Winnebago County Housing Authority staff.
The Red Cross was assisting survivors.
Fire officials estimated fire damage to the house at $80,000.
