The FSU Seminoles have three players on the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List, USA Baseball announced on Thursday. Despite being one of the most well-represented teams in the country, there was one notable exception in star shortstop Alex Lodise, who failed to make the list.
It was quite a snub as he was just named the Perfect Game and D1Baseball Midseason Player of the Year on Wednesday. He has been FSU’s best player through 28 games, hitting .463 with 10 doubles, 11 home runs, and 37 RBI. He leads the country in hits (56) and total bases (103) and ranks in the top 10 in batting average and slugging percentage (.871).
FSU’s entire weekend rotation made the watch list with ace Jamie Arnold staying on after making the preseason version. Joey Volini and Wes Mendes have both earned their way on after excellent starts to their FSU careers. The Seminoles were one of three programs to have three players on the list.
Arnold is one of three players to make the list after being a semifinalist a season ago. He is 3-1 with a 3.07 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 29.1 innings. He has held opponents to a .186 batting average.
Volini’s seven wins are the most in the country and his 1.25 ERA is fourth. He ranks inside the top 10 in WHIP (0.81) strikeouts (63). Mendes is 4-0 with a 2.83 ERA in 35.0 innings and has struck out 52 batters.
The semifinalist for the award will be announced on May 18 with the winner revealed in June. FSU has had four players win the award, the most since it was created in 1978.
