A three-alarm fire damaged part of a four-story apartment building near the Milwaukee-Glendale border on June 1, sending firefighters from multiple departments to the scene, according to Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski.
The fire was first reported at 4:41 p.m. at Parkside at Estabrook Apartments, 4848 N. Lydell Ave. The building sits partly within Milwaukee and partly within Glendale, prompting responses from both the Milwaukee Fire Department and the North Shore Fire Department.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the third floor extending to the fourth floor and into the roofline, Lipski said. The fire ultimately grew to a third alarm.
One resident told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel they saw smoke coming from an elevator during the fire.
Lipski said the fire appears to have started on an exterior porch, though the cause remains under investigation. Firefighters evacuated the building while crews attacked the fire from both inside and outside.
No injuries to residents or firefighters had been reported as of June 1.
Two apartment units sustained direct fire damage, while additional units could be affected by smoke, water or damage in the roof area.
The American Red Cross said 14 people from eight apartment units were displaced by the fire. The organization is assisting residents with shelter and other immediate needs.
The building’s sprinkler system helped limit the spread of the fire into occupied units, Lipski said.
“We’re hopeful we can get some of the folks back in [this evening],” Lipski said.
Lipski said the North Shore Fire Department is leading the investigation and that North Shore officials would release additional information.
