One person dead, four severely injured after Wednesday crash in Saukville

One person was killed and four people were severely injured in a multi-vehicle crash in Saukville on Nov. 26, according to the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 3:11 p.m. Wednesday, the sheriff’s office responded to a crash involving semi tractor-trailer and three vehicles on Interstate 43 at State 33 in Saukville. Throughout the day, high winds and light snow had deteriorated road conditions across southeast Wisconsin.

The semi was driving southbound on I-43 when it lost control, jack-knifed and veered into the northbound lanes, the sheriff’s office said. The semi was then struck by two vehicles traveling northbound — a 2013 Mercedes Benz Sprinter Van and a 2018 Ford Fusion — before it came to a stop, blocking both northbound lanes of traffic.

The Mercedes Benz and Ford Fusion both ended up pinned underneath the semi, according to the sheriff’s office. The driver of the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the Ford Fusion sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton.

A northbound Subaru Forester also struck the semi and ended up between the northbound lanes and the exit ramp to State 33. The three people in the vehicle suffered severe, but non-life-threatening, injuries and were transported to the same hospital in Grafton.

The crash shut down the northbound I-43 lanes for more than five hours. Along with Ozaukee County authorities, first responders from Saukville, Port Washington, Grafton, Waubeka and Fredonia were on the scene.

All I-43 lanes were reopened at about 8:35 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.
