Mobile Market brings groceries to Metcalfe Park after Pick 'n Save closure

The Hunger Task Force Mobile Market set up a new stop at the now shuttered Metcalfe Park Pick ‘n Save at 2355 N. 35th Street on Thursday, Aug. 21.

Piggly Wiggly partnered with the Mobile Market to provide groceries at a 25% discount to community members in and around Metcalfe Park from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Shoppers steadily entered the Mobile Market truck which contained shelves lined with fresh produce, bread, eggs, dairy and meat products. A Piggly Wiggly employee checked out customers while volunteers with Hunger Task Force bagged groceries and helped shoppers load bags into their cars.

“I got all the fruits and vegetables I wanted and even a steak for $67,” said Danell Cross, the executive director of Metcalfe Park Community Bridges.

Many Metcalfe Park residents worry about fresh food access after the July 18 closure of the neighborhood’s primary grocery store. The North 35th Street location was one of five Pick ‘n Save closures across Wisconsin.

The Mobile Market will return to Metcalfe Park once a month and will visit other locations around Milwaukee throughout the month, with stops in places such as the McGovern Park and Washington Park senior centers, according to the Mobile Market’s calendar.

They will return to Metcalfe Park on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the same location.

Shoppers can pay for the groceries with Quest EBT, debit or credit cards. Cash is not accepted.
