MANITOWOC – The 37th Lakeshore Holiday Parade was a no-go.
Snow, high winds and slippery roads led to the parade being canceled shortly before it was to step off at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26. Several participant cancellations preceded the parade cancellation.
Visit Manitowoc, the city’s tourism department, shared on Facebook: “The weather took a turn for the worse in the last hour. We will not be able to have the staff shut down the streets for the parade, as they are handling other calls. Several entries cancelled over the last few minutes as well.
“We will look into rescheduling the parade to a later date (not this weekend),” the post added.
The region was under a Hazardous Weather Outlook Wednesday with the National Weather Service calling for light snow of accumulations of 1-4 inches combined with gusty northwest winds of 35-50 mph. The conditions created hazardous travel across the region.
Wednesday night’s forecast called for a chance of snow in the evening with considerable blowing and drifting snow. Lows were to be in the middle 20s with west wind of 25-35 mph and gusts up to 50 mph decreasing to 40 mph after midnight.
Thanksgiving Day on Thursday is expected to be windy and partly sunny with some blowing and drifting snow. The afternoon brings a 20% chance of snow showers with northwest wind of 20-30 mph and gusts reaching 40 mph.
