Texas Tech quarterback Will Hammond’s journey back to being the QB1 has been a long one. Put aside the Brendan Sorsby drama; recovering from an ACL tear is a long road for any athlete.
Luckily for Hammond, he has had quite the sounding board for discussing the issue. Red Raiders legend Patrick Mahomes and Hammond have been in contact throughout the rehabilitation process.
The three-time Super Bowl MVP for the Kansas City Chiefs also suffered an ACL tear during his 2025 football season, not long after Hammond suffered his against Oklahoma State. Hammond was asked by Caleigh Jo Hommel of KAMC News at Texas Tech Media Day on Tuesday what the two have talked about. “We chatted early on about surgery dates and whatnot,” Hammond said.
The two would continue their conversation later at Texas Tech’s pro day ahead of the NFL 2026 draft. Hammond added that they discussed “rehab processes…[and] the kind of exercises and modalities” Mahomes and his team were using as well as mindset.
But with both quarterbacks entering fall camp, according to Hammond, “more recently” the two have talked about the upcoming season. Mahomes provided encouraging words to the redshirt sophomore quarterback, telling him to, “…go crush it and remember the job’s not finished…It’s time to go do big things this fall.”
The Red Raiders certainly achieved big things in 2025. But head coach Joey McGuire and his team are looking to take that next step. Having Mahomes provide encouragement to Hammond as the two walked similar journeys is a great first step as Texas Tech opens fall camp today.
