There is probably no food as iconic as the American hamburger, a popular handheld staple at many major restaurants and fast food chains.
Whether you like it traditional with a beef patty, lettuce and tomato toppings or a little more adventurous with bacon, jalapeños and barbecue sauce, the American hamburger is a beloved classic, always satisfying the most intense cravings.
While the iconicness of the burger is more easiely agreed on, what’s often the spark for debate is where one goes to get the perfect hamburger, especially in a place like Abilene where the options are seemingly endless.
So we rounded up the six most popular restaurants to get a hamburger, and now we want you to decide which one is the best by voting in our best burger restaurant in Abilene poll.

Lucy’s Big Burgers
Lucy’s Big Burgers where Southern hospitality meets Texas-sized burgers.
Located at 110 S. 27th St., Lucy’s is known for their 1/2 pound USDA certified beef patties, which are prepared fresh at the 50s-diner-inspired restaurant.
Burger options are plentiful, including classic combinations and unique finds like the green chile burger, the Hawaiian burger and the Texas Burner.
Blu Barrel Bar & Grill
With three locations in Abilene, Blue Barrel Bar & Grill offers a sports bar atmosphere with a diverse menu featuring gourmet 1/2 pound beef burgers.
Unique finds include the hangover burger with bacon and fried egg, the hot mess burger with red onions and queso and the fire in the hole burger with cream cheese and jalapeno peppers.
Blu Barrel is located at 2534 S. Treadaway Blvd., 6410 Buffalo Gap Road and 829 N. Judge Ely Blvd.
Larry’s Better Burger Drive-In
As one of Abilene’s oldest burger joints, Larry’s Better Burger Drive-In is a community staple that has been serving Abilene old-fashioned burgers since the 1950s.
Operated now for over 50 years by Larry Olney and family, Larry’s offers a better burger at a low price in a retro-style drive-up restaurant at 1233 N. Treadway Blvd.
Larry’s Better Burger Drive-In is a cash-only establishment and is closed Saturday and Sunday.
Texas Flaming Grill
Locally owned and operated, Texas Flaming Grill offers chargrilled burgers cooked on open flame at their Abilene location, 549 Ambler Ave., delivering Texas flavor and a signature smoky taste.
Utilizing fresh, high-quality Texas beef, Texas Flaming Grill’s menu includes classic favorites like the cheeseburger and unique creations like the Western BBQ burger and the three cheese bacon burger.
With a wide range of toppings and sauces, customers also have the option to customize their own burger creation as well.
Twisted Root Burger Co.
Opened in 2022, Twisted Root Burger Co.’s Abilene location has quickly become a community favorite, serving fresh gourmet burgers with “off the wall” toppings.
Located at 2419 N. Judge Ely Blvd., Twisted Root offers both traditional beef burgers as well as rotational game meat burgers including elk, buffalo, camel and more.
Other menu highlights include the low rider burger with a taco-seasoned patty, the Kevin bacon burger with blue cheese, and the Deez Nuts burger with peanut butter and habanero bacon jam.
Grain Theory
Located in the heart of downtown Abilene, Grain Theory operates as a brewery and taphouse serving high-quality food and beverage with elevated downtown views.
Opened in early 2021, Grain Theory’s menu includes a plethora of hearty favorites, including the Brewhouse burger, a 1/2 pound seasoned and seared beef patty on a toasted brioche bun.
Grain Theory is located at 202 Pine St. Suite 201 and is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
