WATCH: Texas A&M transfer CB snags impressive interception

Texas A&M’s 2026 secondary was deservedly praised by coach Mike Elko during Tuesday’s first preseason press conference, stating that his revamped cornerback and safety rotation has reached an “SEC-level” after adding several players from the transfer portal, combined with veteran cornerbacks Dezz Ricks, Julio Humphrey, and Adonyss Currie, and elite safety duo Dalton Brooks and Marcus Ratcliffe.

Among the transfer defensive backs, former Tennessee cornerback Rickey Gibson is in line to earn the starting field CB job after missing all but one game with the Volunteers during the 2025 season, and while he was slighly beat up during the spring season, Gibson posesses the NFL traits to make an instant impact, and help replace Will Lee III, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.

During Texas A&M’s first preseason practice on Wednesday, Gibson made one of the more impressive plays on the day, leaping up for his first unofficial interception with the Aggies in solid coverage against freshman wide receiver Jayden Warren, which was captured by Texas A&M Football’s media team.

Yes, Rickey Gibson covering a freshman wide receiver should result in at least a pass deflection, but given his injury status last season, any improvement is a great sign and backs up Elko’s claim that Texas A&M will deploy one of the best secondaries in the SEC.

Entering his redshirt junior season with the Aggies, Gibson recorded 32 tackles and three pass deflections during the 2024 season, and while missing an entire year may have some negative consequences, having fresh legs and spending more time watching film should pay off this season.
