Longtime Major League Baseball outfielder Jason Heyward will continue to play for the El Paso Chihuahuas at Southwest University Park as he continues his rehabilitation from a left oblique strain.
The first pitch is at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday, June 18.
The Chihuahuas are the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Heyward suffered the injury on May 23 when he was with the Padres and was placed on the disabled list.
The Chihuahuas began a six-game homestand on Tuesday vs. Reno, and Heyward reached base once on a walk in four at-bats.
It remains uncertain how many games Heyward will be with the team, said Tim Hagerty, the team’s media relations manager.
Heyward played with El Paso on a recent road trip to Round Rock and had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI in three games in Round Rock. His first game with El Paso was on Friday, June 13.
Heyward hit two home runs and drove in 12 runs for the Padres before the injury. Heyward has played in the majors since 2010, hitting 186 homers and driving in 730 runs.
In addition to San Diego, His career has included stops in Atlanta, St. Louis, Chicago, Los Angeles and Houston.
Heyward has won five Gold Gloves in his career for his outstanding defensive play, was part of the 2016 Chicago Cubs team that won the World Series, and was an All-Star in 2010.
