Texas Tech ranked high in latest preseason ranking

The 2026 college football season is nearly upon us, and the Texas Tech Red Raiders will look to build off of their success last year and repeat as Big 12 champions.

At this point in the year, rankings are being published, and so far, Texas Tech has been ranked very high on several lists. Chip Patterson of CBS Sports posted his ranking of all 138 FBS programs, and Texas Tech was ranked at No. 8. It is a one-spot drop from their final 2025 rankings.

In the US LBM preseason coaches poll, Texas Tech ranked 12th, so each list is going to be different. But on Patterson’s list, they were the highest-ranked team from the Big 12. The BYU Cougars ranked at No. 16 while the Utah Utes were ranked 24th. Their first test of the season will be in Week 3 when they play the Houston Cougars, who were ranked 26th.

Texas Tech begins its season at Galaxy Stadium on Sept. 5 against the Abilene Christian Wildcats. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. CT and will be on FS1
