Texas A&M's offensive line acheives impressive feat through first eight games

No. 3 Texas A&M’s 8-0 A 5-0 record and a 5-0 standing in SEC play have earned the Aggies significant praise from the national media, especially after blowing out LSU 49-25 on Saturday night, leading to the firing of Tigers head coach Brian Kelly after less than four full seasons. However, while Kelly’s dismissal has overtaken the sports news cycle, Texas A&M’s dominance is a much more important story.

Texas A&M’s offense, which has thrived behind OC Collin Klein’s playcalling and starting quarterback Marcel Reed’s dual-threat playmaking, is averaging nearly 460 yards per game. At the same time, Reed can thank his elite offensive line, which has not allowed a sack in five of the Aggies’ eight games this season, including the last three SEC wins.

With this impressive blocking, Marcel Reed has had plenty of time to go through his progressions and deliver strikes from the pocket, as the redshirt sophomore has thrown for 1,972 yards and 17 touchdowns, paired with 349 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

Competing for a National Championship means elite play in the trenches on both sides of the ball, which has been the case for the Aggies, who currently lead the country in total sacks (32), led by senior edge Cashius Howell’s ten sacks.

Texas A&M’s offensive line is one of the largest units in the country, averaging well over 300 pounds per starter and reserve. Under O-line coach Adam Cushing, this group has thrived in both gap and zone blocking schemes, leading to the 26th-ranked rushing attack, averaging just over 200 yards per game.

Heading into the bye week, Texas A&M will look to rest and regroup before taking on the Missouri Tigers on the road in Week 11.
