No. 3 Texas A&M (11-0, 7-0 SEC) stays put at No. 3 in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings after defeating Samford 48-0, as the Aggies will now head to Austin (TX) to take on the No. 16-ranked Texas Longhorns (8-3, 5-2 SEC), who are on the fringe of the CFP, and need to beat Texas A&M combined with hoping several teams lose this weekend.
On Monday, during Texas A&M’s pre-game press conference, head coach Mike Elko stated that senior running back Le’Veon Moss, who has missed the last five games due to his ankle injury, “probably” won’t play against the Longhorns, but has made progress during his rehabilitation period. This isn’t surprising, but Elko did state last week that Moss had a chance to return during the regular season.
Against Samford, sophomore running back Rueben Owens and transfer wide receiver Mario Craver suited up, but did not play after suffering minor injuries during the Aggies’ epic comeback win over South Carolina. This was the right move by Elko, who is playing the long game, knowing that both players are too valuable heading into the Black Friday showdown.
On Tuesday, the first SEC Availability Report was released, showing Le’Veon Moss as “doubtful” ahead of the game, giving the senior a 25% chance to play. In contrast, senior linebacker Scooby Williams, who has missed the last two games, is also doubtful to play.
For Texas, sophomore LB Ty’Anthony Smith will miss the first half due to his targeting penalty against Arkansas, and junior star linebacker Anthony Hill, who sustained a broken bone in his hand against Georgia, is “questionable” to play, giving him a 50% chance to take the field.
Unsurprisingly, senior safety Bryce Anderson and freshman safety Rashad Johnson are listed as out, as Anderson will likely redshirt after missing most of the season.
