On the defensive line, there’s a clear opportunity for someone to emerge as the next All‑SEC edge rusher and one sophomore is positioning himself to seize it. Marco Jones flashed repeatedly as a true freshman, and he did so while still splitting time as a dual‑sport athlete in baseball. Now fully committed to football, his ceiling is difficult to pin down, but the trajectory is unmistakably upward.
Jones already brings prototypical SEC size to the position at 6‑foot‑5 and 260 pounds. After a full offseason under strength coach Tommy Moffitt, we’ll get a true sense of where his power and explosiveness stand once conference play begins. In a rotational role last season, Jones appeared in all 13 games and posted 21 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. Strong production considering his limited opportunities.

The former four‑star prospect was a 2024 Navy All‑American Bowl selection and the Cal‑Hi Sports State Junior of the Year in 2023, cementing his status as one of California’s most productive defenders. He helped lead San Ramon Valley to a CIF state championship as a sophomore and finished his career with nearly 425 tackles, including 214 solo stops, 53.0 tackles for loss, 13.0 sacks, seven forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and six interceptions. A versatile, high‑motor competitor, he also excelled as a multi‑sport athlete, competing in basketball and baseball.
Depth Chart Outlook
The battle for defensive end isn’t completely settled, but a few players have already separated themselves as the ones most likely to take the first snaps. With Cashius Howell setting an elite standard last season, Coach Mike Elko is searching for the next impact edge defender to step into that role. That’s exactly where Marco Jones fits. The tools, the frame, and the trajectory are all there, and at this point it’s nearly a foregone conclusion that he’ll claim a starting job.
