More athletes are looking to challenge the “Five for Five” rule in college athletics, including a pair of former Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Darrion Williams, who played for NC State last season, and Donovan Atwell, who just finished his summer league duties with the Chicago Bulls, are among the list of athletes seeking a temporary and permanent injunction, according to college basketball insider Jeff Goodman.
Both players have recently been spotted in Lubbock, and there have been rumors that the duo could seek to play for head coach Grant McCasland for the 2026-27 college basketball season. This would certainly turn the tide in the Hub City for the Red Raiders. The team recently received a commitment from former UCF Knight forward Jamichael Stillwell, who is also seeking another season of eligibility.
Donovan is coming off the best season of his collegiate career, averaging 13.5 points per game while shooting a blistering .458 from behind the arc. He joined the Red Raiders after three seasons with UNC-Greensboro. Williams started at Nevada before playing two seasons with Tech and transferred to NC State last season.
If either or both were able to win an injunction and suit for the Red and Black, it would be a major win for the team. Especially if Stillwell also gets another year to play at the collegiate level. All of a sudden, the trajectory of the men’s basketball program looks much different.
The team will have JT Toppin in the middle with a transfer trio of Cruz Davis, Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn and Damarion Dennis. Add in DaKari Spear as the team’s lone high school signee, and you have a solid core. But the team still needs an added element.
An element that is improved should Atwell, Stillwell, and Williams all suit up for Grant McCasland in 2026.
