The Nueces River near Three Rivers has reached major flood status as floodwaters from the Texas Hill Country continue to move downstream into South Texas, according to the National Weather Service Corpus Christi.
The Nueces River had reached 35.33 feet as of 4:15 p.m. on July 30 and is predicted to reach 39.2 feet by July 31, a graph by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows.
The Live Oak County Office of Emergency Management said that more than 45 state, local and regional organizations have responded to the flooding by assisting with public safety, recovery planning, road monitoring and more, according to a Facebook post.
In another Facebook post, Live Oak County Judge James Liska visited County Road 438 where flooding had occurred to warn residents living along the Nueces River to “turn around, don’t drown.”
In the video, he said the backup flood waters on the road are expected to rise higher and the crest, or peak of the flood stage, is predicted to occur on Aug. 1.
County Road 436 in the Simmons community is closed due to flooding, according to the Live Oak Office of Emergency Management.
George West Junior High has become a shelter for residents and pets during the flooding event with assistance from the American Red Cross.
Wes Rapaport, spokesperson for Texas Division of Emergency Management, said in a statement to the Caller-Times that state emergency response resources remain engaged amid ongoing flood threats across parts of southwest and south central Texas.
“Texans are encouraged to be prepared to implement their emergency plans, keep emergency supplies readily available and be sure to follow instructions from local officials,” Rapaport said.
Lake Corpus Christi is expected to receive water from the Nueces River by this weekend.
