For the third time this season, the Texas A&M Aggies (5-2) eclipsed the century mark and set a new season high in a 120-84 home win over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils.
The Aggies are starting to show more consistency on offense and are showing more of what they can do when they make the shots they are supposed to hit. It still wasn’t as clean as you would prefer against a team like Mississippi Valley State, but they accomplished what they needed to. Mackenzie Mgbako received his first extended minutes this season, and while it’s clear his conditioning is not yet up to par, he still looked very smooth.
He was one of six Aggies who scored in double digits and led all Aggies with 19 points. As a team, they had one of their best shooting nights this season, going 50% from the field, 47% from the three-point line, and 84% from the free-throw line. Two others who stood out were Jamie Vinson (12 points), who was strong in the paint, and Zach Clemence, who went 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.
If there is one area they still need to improve, it’s the half-court defense, and with only six games played, there is still time to address that. Even though they forced 31 turnovers, they still allowed MVSU to shoot over 50% from the field. They might be who they are and will need to outscore teams to secure the majority of their wins.
The 120 points were the most ever scored at Reed Arena and the second most all-time in the program’s history. Coach Bucky McMillan is getting closer to what he wants to see from his roster and will face a big test when they host Florida State.
Texas A&M will host Florida State at Reed Arena on Friday, November 28, at 4:00 p.m. CT. The game will air on ESPN2.
