A San Patricio County grand jury indicted Ingleside police officer Samuel J. Hernandez on a charge of official oppression stemming from an incident that happened on May 2.
Hernandez was charged for unlawful mistreatment and assault or arrest without cause on July 30, according to the indictment.
Under Texas law, official oppression refers to a public servant violating someone’s rights or subjecting them to sexual harassment.
The officer was on duty at the time of the incident.
The charge of official oppression is a Class A misdemeanor and can result in a fine of up to $4,000, a jail sentence for up to one year or both.
Hernandez was taken into custody by the Texas Rangers at the San Patricio County Sheriff’s Office on July 31.
A San Patricio County justice of the peace set his bond at $4,000.
