Corpus Christi experienced some major milestones in the 1950s.
The JKF Causeway, initially known as the Padre Island Causeway, opened in 1950. People said farewell to their lovers and family members as they departed for the Korean War in 1951.
The Harbor Bridge was also erected in 1959, and a raffle was drawn to see who would cross the bridge first. The highway department later told the Caller-Times that more than 42,000 vehicles crossed the bridge within its first day of operation.
