The Houston Texans may have some injury concerns behind running back David Montgomery, but there is no doubt who is Houston’s top running back entering 2026.
“I’m excited about ‘DMo.’ I love ‘DMo’,” tight end Dalton Schultz said. “I think just the attitude that he brings, the attitude that he runs with. Being a guy that’s been on the other side, like going against him for a few years, I’m happy that he’s on our side. Just another big veteran presence and I think at the end of the day we’re all going to feel good handing the ball to ‘DMo’ knowing that he’s in the backfield running with a ball in his hand. I think anytime you can get a guy like that, especially in the backfield, that’s a workhorse and is a leader, it’s good.”
Houston still has its starting running back from last season, Woody Marks. Marks had a decent rookie season with 703 rushing yards. However, the Texans’ run game struggled to reach the end zone, as they managed only 9 rushing touchdowns all season.
Only the Las Vegas Raiders mustered fewer scores on the ground.
Montgomery, 29, spent three years behind Jahmyr Gibbs with the Detroit Lions, but was a magnet for the end zone with 33 touchdowns. Before that, he spent four seasons as the starter for the Chicago Bears, where he posted his first 1,000-yard season, along with 26 touchdowns.
His 59 total rushing touchdowns currently rank 22nd among active running backs, so he is certainly the player who will help the Texans have more rushing touchdowns this season.
The Texans open the preseason against the Los Angeles Chargers this Thursday at Reliant Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ABC.
